Diwali Festival of Lights, deeply rooted in Indian culture, transcends geographical boundaries and resonates with unparalleled vibrancy among the Indian diaspora, serving as a powerful link to our heritage.
Each year, the anticipation for Diwali builds into a crescendo of excitement, transforming homes and communities into luminous canvases of celebration. It’s a cherished time when traditions, both private and communal, are observed with fervent dedication. Streets and homes glow with intricate light arrangements, the air crackles with the joyous sounds of fireworks, and melodious devotional music fills the atmosphere, creating an enchanting ambiance that speaks to the heart of our culture.
At its core, Diwali embodies universal truths: the triumph of good over evil, the victory of knowledge over ignorance, and the emergence of hope from despair. This profound symbolism is beautifully manifested in the lighting of lamps, from traditional earthen diyas to modern electric lights and candles. These illuminations are not merely decorative; they are sacred gestures, inviting divine blessings for prosperity, wisdom, and well-being into every family’s abode. It’s a powerful reminder that within each of us lies the capacity to dispel shadows and embrace enlightenment.Inline image
Indeed, our spiritual teachings emphasize that true awakening begins when we consciously pursue wisdom, diligently acquire knowledge, and bravely explore the depths of our understanding. By igniting these literal and metaphorical lamps, we spark not just a fleeting flicker, but a brilliant, radiant beacon within our souls. This internal radiance, when allowed to shine forth unobstructed, truly embodies the spirit of Diwali, empowering us to uplift ourselves and the world around us. It is this glorious inner light that ultimately illuminates our path and empowers us to contribute positively to society.

The growing recognition of this festival’s cultural significance is evidenced by many metropolitan areas celebrating it widely, with several states now actively considering making Diwali an official public holiday.
This past Saturday, the spirit of Diwali shone exceptionally bright across Virginia, particularly at the Fairfax County Government Center auditorium. For the second consecutive year, this venue hosted a magnificent celebration orchestrated by families connected to the Durga Temple’s “Mere Apne” program. The auditorium was a spectacle of joy, teeming with over 300 attendees, all adorned in their finest festive attire. The surrounding parking lots, filled to capacity, mirrored the overwhelming enthusiasm for the event.
The successful execution of this grand gathering was a testament to the dedicated efforts of the temple program coordinators, Sapna Rohatgi, Shashi Anand, and Preeti Singh, who received invaluable guidance from the temple management and generous support from private patrons.
The culinary centerpiece of the event, a delectable lunch, was made possible primarily by the remarkable philanthropy of the Mahima and Parveen Tewari family, alongside numerous other individuals who contributed food and cash. These contributions are especially significant as they also benefit the temple, which is currently under construction, poised to serve as an even greater hub for our community. A special note of gratitude goes to the Shashi and Shekhar Anand family for their thoughtful contribution of traditional sweets.
The air in the county building’s basement was thick with the irresistible aromas of Indian culinary delights: freshly fried bread, richly spiced curried potatoes, creamy cottage cheese and peas curry, refreshing yogurt dishes, and an assortment of exquisite Indian sweets. Here, guests savored the catered lunch, immersing themselves in the vibrant atmosphere. The combined presence of talented performers, dedicated volunteers, and happy attendees created a truly cheerful and memorable experience for everyone. It was a fantastic opportunity for all to partake in a delicious meal and bask in the collective festive ambiance.
Similar uplifting events unfolded concurrently across the town, from other temples and community centers to local restaurants, all echoing the vibrant spirit of Diwali.
May the light and joy of Diwali continue to fill every heart with boundless happiness and laughter throughout the year.
