On Thursday, May 29, 2025, the City of Beaverton, Oregon hosted an in-person event at the Beaverton City Library as part of the Belonging Speaker Series, titled “Know Your Neighbor: New Year’s Celebrations and Traditions.” This engaging and educational evening brought together community members to learn how diverse cultures celebrate the New Year, with a focus on Hindu, Jewish, Persian, and Chinese traditions. The speakers—Zahra, Ashutosh, Rachel, and Annie—each shared personal and cultural insights into their respective celebrations, offering stories that highlighted both unique and universal elements. A key theme that connected all the traditions was the act of deep cleaning the home—a symbolic gesture of clearing away the old and making space for renewal. Another common thread was the preparation and sharing of delicious food, especially sweets, which symbolize joy, abundance, and the hope for a prosperous year ahead.
