Celine Parreñas Shimizu, a trailblazing Filipino-American scholar, filmmaker, and author, recently made history as the first Filipino dean of UCLA’s School of Theater, Film and Television. Born in Iloilo City and raised in the U.S. after her family fled the Marcos dictatorship, she brings a deeply personal and activist lens to her leadership.

Shimizu studied in Ethnic Studies at UC Berkeley, earned her M.F.A. in Film Directing and Production at UCLA, and went on to receive a Ph.D. in Modern Thought and Literature from Stanford University. Today, she empowers marginalized students through creativity, scholarship, and community. Despite national political tensions and attacks on diversity in education, she remains committed to bold, inclusive storytelling and fostering empathy through film and theater.
