Summary
President Donald Trump’s second term commenced on January 20, 2025, with a sweeping agenda that relied heavily on executive orders to reshape policy across multiple fronts. Within his first 100 days, he issued more than 140 executive orders.
National Council of Asian Pacific Americans (NCAPA) has published a 74-page report on how these executive orders affect AANHPI communities in the areas of civil rights, immigration, education, health, economic justice, and the environment. In developing this report, NCAPA collaborated with its 44 partner organizations representing East Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities.
The report is fill with many vivid examples of how specific communities are affected by different executive orders. One example is Executive Order 14224. It rollsback the federal mandate to provide language access to non-English speakers. This will be detrimental to the Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander community, which already has very low access to healthcare, educational resources, and civic engagement.
The report also reminds us of the battle that Asian Americans have fought to achieve the rights enshrined in the U.S. Constitution. In 1898, Wong Kim Ark sued the Federal government to protect his right to birthright citizenship. The landmark ruling in his favor established a precedent that is now being challenged.
The NCAPA report is comprehensive and robust. It serves as a call to action for policymakers, advocates, the media, and philanthropy to amplify AANHPI voices in the national discussion of the administration’s policy agenda.
