This dual heritage is not a contradiction; it is one of America’s enduring strengths.

Every immigrant family carries two precious pieces of luggage: dreams for the future and memories of the past. The challenge and privilege is carrying both without leaving either behind. When I came to America, I was seeking more than better opportunities. Like millions of immigrants before me, my spouse and I pursued the American Dream: a life where hard work, education, and determination could open doors for our children and offer them possibilities beyond what we had imagined.

We also hoped our children would stay connected to their parents’ heritage. Rather than a burden, heritage is a foundation that helps young people build confidence in a changing world. When children understand their family’s history, they often develop a stronger sense of identity and resilience. They also come to appreciate sacrifice, perseverance, and gratitude as vital parts of the legacy they inherit.

Reflecting on my journey from India to America, I recognize that much of my life has been devoted to building bridges between two countries I deeply value. One gave me my roots; the other gave my family the opportunity to grow. Like many immigrants, I arrived in the United States carrying far more than a suitcase. I brought memories of family gatherings, vibrant festivals, deep respect for elders, and a belief that education and hard work can transform lives. These values became the foundation upon which we built our American dream.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, some believe that success in America requires immigrants to leave behind the customs, languages, and traditions of their homeland. I respectfully disagree. My experience has shown that the American Dream is most meaningful when immigrant families preserve their cultural heritage while fully embracing the values and opportunities of the United States.

As an immigrant from India who has spent decades building a life in America, I have experienced this balance firsthand. The United States provided my family with opportunities that previous generations could only envision, rewarding hard work, education, and perseverance. At the same time, the values that guided our journey—respect for elders, commitment to family, service to the community, and the importance of education—were deeply rooted in the culture we brought with us.

Parents have an important responsibility to preserve and pass forward these values. We want our children to succeed in their adopted country, excel academically, build meaningful careers, and participate fully in American life. At the same time, we hope they will understand their grandparents’ stories, honor family traditions, and appreciate the sacrifices that made their opportunities possible. This should not be seen as a choice between two identities, but as an opportunity to help our children embrace both with confidence.

During my return to India after nine years, I observed a country that had undergone substantial transformation. Modern highways, digital payment systems, and technological innovation were increasingly evident, while families continued to gather for festivals, honor elders, and preserve longstanding traditions. The visit underscored an important lesson: progress and heritage are not mutually exclusive; a society can advance while remaining firmly rooted in the cultural values that define it.

The same principle applies in the United States. Our children and grandchildren can thrive in one of the world’s most innovative nations while maintaining a meaningful connection to the cultures that shaped their families. Speaking another language, observing cultural traditions, or preparing traditional foods does not diminish one’s American identity. Rather, these practices contribute to the richness and strength of American society.
Throughout my years of community service, I have observed that cultural celebrations foster connection rather than division. When neighbors gain a deeper understanding of one another’s traditions, misconceptions diminish and meaningful relationships develop. In this way, diversity becomes more than an ideal; it becomes a shared and lived experience.

In today’s fast-paced digital environment, I am concerned that family stories are increasingly being displaced by social media, and that meaningful conversations around the dinner table are becoming less frequent. Heritage is not preserved by chance; it must be shared with intention. Parents and grandparents should not assume that the next generation will naturally absorb these values. We must tell our stories, explain our traditions, and actively invite our children to participate in them.

This responsibility does not rest solely with immigrant families. Schools, community organizations, and civic leaders also play an important role by promoting cultural understanding and creating environments in which every family’s history is recognized and valued. The American Dream has never required individuals to erase their past. Rather, it has invited them to contribute their talents, traditions, and aspirations to a nation shaped by immigrants from around the world. This remains one of America’s greatest strengths.
If we want future generations to be successful, compassionate, and grounded, we should not ask them to choose between their heritage and their American identity. Instead, we should encourage them to value both. These identities are not in conflict; they complement and strengthen one another. As I reflect on my own journey, I believe my generation did more than pursue opportunity—we built bridges between cultures. My hope is that our children will continue crossing those bridges with confidence and pride, carrying forward the best of both worlds. In my view, which is the American Dream worth preserving.

As an Indian American immigrant, I became increasingly interested in the political landscape of the United States. My interactions with various political figures provided valuable opportunities to gain experience about national politics through their insightful speeches. The activism of my spouse, Rajen Anand, had a profound impact on me, along with the support of mentors like Maeley Tom, one of the most prominent non-elected leaders in the Asian American community, as well as Georgette Imura, Marissa Castro-Salvati, and many others to name a few from those days.

I remember attending numerous rallies and community events as Secretary of the Orange County Central Committee of the Democratic Party in California. At each gathering, Reverend Jesse Jackson’s presence was commanding. His oratory was electrifying, and he invariably closed his speeches with the unforgettable call: “Keep hope alive.” Those words were not merely a slogan, they were a movement.

His remarkable talent, steadfast dedication, and genuine enthusiasm for civil liberties consistently impressed me. His leadership in forming the Rainbow PUSH Coalition reflected a bold and inclusive vision for America. He championed freedom, equality, and fairness within the justice system, giving voice to those too often unheard.

Following in the moral footsteps of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jackson embodied the courage and conviction of the civil rights movement. I am also witnessing daily the images of unrest, anger, and profound division that permeate our society. Dr. King’s words resound with renewed urgency. His dream was not nurtured in comfort or tranquility; it emerged during a time of profound injustice, fear, and resistance. Recalling this context reminds me that today’s unrest, while distressing, also reflects unresolved wounds that still demand moral courage and forthright accountability. Numerous families in Iran, Bangladesh, and other global regions are grappling with political upheaval. Additionally, there is unrest in various parts of the world where natural calamities and poverty have wreaked havoc, resulting in people living under challenging circumstances. We also encounter unrest within our own country, where citizens are troubled, and their daily activities are significantly impacted by the presence of federal forces in pursuit of individuals from other nations who were escaping from poverty and residing in this country without proper documentation and legal status. It is widely believed that our systems are strained due to the influx of individuals without legal status, who are depleting our resources.

All these situations, consistently depicted by American Networks, serve as poignant reminders of the enduring principles of Martin Luther King Jr.’s compassion and kindness. This is particularly evident when considering the peace walk undertaken by a group of Buddhist monks and their canine companion, Aloka. Their journey, spanning an impressive 2,300 miles from Texas to Washington, D.C., has garnered widespread media attention and has inspired countless individuals.

Throughout their trek, individuals have joined the monks for specific segments, providing sustenance and support to their noble cause. On a sunny Sunday afternoon, November 23, 2025, we experienced a musical environment where cultural boundaries converged and melodies traversed regional distinctions, featuring romantic compositions in multiple spoken and written languages. This ethnic musical luncheon served as a showcase of a vibrant tapestry comprising sound, color, and tradition, unified by a consistent theme of diversity within unity of India.

The “Holiday Cheer” luncheon get together included dynamic performances of Punjabi and Rajasthani folk music, alongside classic Bollywood pieces, and romantic Urdu language (Persian) poetry compositions rendered with traditional instruments such as the “Table” (drums) and “Harmonium” (keyboard). Additionally, contemporary voices from the Indian communities of Mumbai, Rajasthan, and Gujarat collaborated to highlight both variety and cohesion through their holiday spirit celebrations.

This elite group of music lovers enjoyed a star musician, Swati Kanitkar, who has many recordings of her music and had also done some playback singing in India and now has been organizing and inspiring young minds who are born in this country to learn and enjoy music from India through her musical group, “Music Kala”. She was joined by another singer of great talent, Harsh Khinchi, an entrepreneur of great caliber and a music enthusiast who sings and plays a few instruments, and Rekha Desai who sings favorite old Bollywood songs of bygone years that are forever popular with diaspora people. They were joined by a young visiting artist from India who has also been credited with lot of accolades and plays Indian drums.

As guests entered the designated venue on November 23, aromatic spices mingled in the air, women wearing ethnic motif and colored saris swirled in to join the holiday party with positive vibes, and musicians invited friends to join their rhythmic circle. Every note told a story, echoing the heritage of distant lands and inviting guests to sway, and sing along. Whether you are rediscovering new sounds or reconnecting with ancestral roots, this luncheon promised to stir everyones spirits and opened their heart to the universal language of love with music.

As the afternoon unfolded, people enjoyed the traditional Indian food and guests were treated to spontaneous collaborations that transcended language barriers, with performers seamlessly blending Gazals of famous singers with contemporary Bollywood rhythms. Each song served as a bridge, connecting varied age group attendees and sub-cultures through the universal language of music from different Indian states having their own sounds and traditions. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement and a sense of togetherness, making every attendee feel like an integral part of this vibrant celebration of Indian culture.

Let the rhythms move all who cherish music, the harmonies that enchant them and the shared moments inspire all who still maintain connections with traditions of India that these people left behind.
